DJ Prophet AKA Kris Figueroa: The Prophet of the Turntables
Golden light beamed through the tan shades of The Nook, bathing the room in a soft glow. Tucked into the corner of the room that seemed to hold the sun’s rays the best, Kris Figueroa was seated in striking couture chairs near the large windows. Better known as DJ Prophet, Kris leaned back, his easy grin as magnetic as his reputation suggested. His charisma filled the space, tempered by a grounded energy that spoke of experience and purpose.
Of course, we had to start with the name; DJ Prophet.
A laugh bubbled from Kris, the kind that immediately puts one at ease. “Yeah, it’s Prophet, spelled P-R-O-P-H-E-T,” he clarified, leaning slightly forward as if letting the listener in on a secret. “It’s about the message through the music; not religious text or fortune-telling. My goal is to only speak the truth to create a positive vibration and create an experience for people to take them somewhere nostalgically and musically. I take them to some part in their life where they’re at their happiest or into a situation that they’d like to be moving toward.”
The whole team listened intently as Kris seemingly spoke our manifestations into existence. At that moment, it was undeniable that there was something special about his abilities.
In truth, his philosophy isn’t just lip service. Kris’s passion for his craft is evident in the way he describes “reading the room.”
“I tune into the vibe,” he explained, his hands moving expressively as if he were crafting an invisible melody. “I read the people, the environment. It’s about making everyone feel like they’re part of one energy. It’s not just playing songs, it’s creating an experience.”
The journey to becoming DJ Prophet started humbly. “It was in my friend’s bedroom, actually,” Kris shared with a laugh, his eyes twinkling with the memory. He described sneaking into his friend’s older brother’s record collection, discovering turntables, and experimenting with beats and scratches. What started as an attempt to rap over instrumentals quickly evolved into a fascination with how music could move a room.
“I’d carry crates into college parties just to watch my friend’s brother DJ,” he said, his tone shifting into reverence. “Seeing him control the energy in the room without saying a word. It was electric. I knew I wanted to do that.”
From those early days of hauling vinyl to now having a résumé that reads like a who’s-who of the music industry, Kris’s journey is a testament to his relentless commitment. He’s toured Canada with The Pharcyde, worked with Goody Mob’s Big Gipp, and DJed events for icons like Stevie Wonder and Britney Spears. He’s been on TV, spun at high-profile weddings (including one featured on Vanderpump Rules), and graced radio stations like LA’s original hip-hop station, 93.5 KDAY.
Still, it was his family that ultimately led him to Temecula.
“L.A. was closing in on me,” Kris admitted, his voice tinged with nostalgia. “I’d just had a baby girl, and I wanted her to grow up with family, her grandparents, her cousins, on a cul-de-sac like I did. My wife and I are both entrepreneurs, so having that support system here made all the difference.”
While life in the Inland Empire is slower than the fast-paced grind of Los Angeles, Kris found his rhythm in the community. He’s become a fixture in youth sports, coaching basketball and football while also mentoring kids through mindset coaching.
“I felt like during the pandemic, a lot of kids were underdeveloped in their social skills and their self-reliance and personal development due to being isolated,” he said in a serious tone. “I felt like it was something I could help with through athletics; getting their mindset right to believe in themselves and tap into their infinite potential as human beings. If they believe it in their minds, they can create it with their hands.”
The same focus on connection drives Kris’s work as a DJ. “It’s not about me,” he said simply. “It’s about the people in the room. Whether it’s a brunch in Menifee or a high-energy club set, my goal is always the same: to inspire joy, unity, and love through music.”
As the golden light of the afternoon began to fade, Kris leaned back with that winning smile.
From the streets of L.A. to the neighborhoods of Temecula, DJ Prophet has stayed true to his mission: spreading truth, light, and unforgettable experiences—one beat at a time.
